Gentlemen, start your bicker engines: Empire Magazine has just released the results of a readers poll, in which Steven Spielberg was named The Greatest Director of All Time. "Steven Spielberg is the closest thing in movies to resemble the impact of The Beatles," said Empire's associate editor Ian Freer. And, in terms of near-universal appeal, that's probably true - and it's clearly why he'd make the top of such a reader-selected list. After all, this *is* Empire, and not, like, Cineaste. Other top tenners that prove Empire's readership could use a dose of historical perspective? Peter Jackson was named Great Director #7, and Quentin Tarantino snuck in at number 8. Who would you have voted for?
