This kind of follows up on the Why Aren't You Going to the Movies question posted earlier. This story from the Hollywood Reporter says older people (defined loosely within the story as over 25, which means I'm five years over the hill) do still go to the movies and seek out adult-oriented (not porn) films. However, that audience is less likely to rush out during the all-important first weekend of release. Instead, they tend to wait a bit and that's causing problems. With theatrical-to-DVD windows shrinking studios need those first couple weekends in order to make most of their money. It's increasingly rare for a movie to be given the time to build word-of-mouth in theaters. If it doesn't hit immediately then it's off to Blockbuster with it sooner rather than later.
