War of the Worlds opened to an estimated $34.606 million dollars worldwide in its first day. The film took in $21.256 million in 3,908 domestic theaters. This is the largest opening day in the history for Paramount Pictures as well as the largest opening day for a Tom Cruise movie. Look, he still does have name value! Right?

It's estimated that the film made another $13.350 million internationally from 46 territories. And the movie is still not open in 10 markets, including the U.K., France, Belgium, and Korea. This is the seventh biggest domestic debut for a Wednesday opening; it places Spielberg's film ahead of 2001's Jurassic Park III, which did $19 million, and behind 2003's The Matrix Revolutions which took in $24.3 million.

The industry was disapointed when Batman Begins opened to $15.1 million on Wednesday, June 15th, but it has since climbed to $130 million. To put this all in perspective, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith claimed the top opening day in box office history with $50 million.
