If you didn't know, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a straight adaptation of the book of the same name (unlike Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which was a musical based on the book). We've already talked a little bit about the troubles in adapting the book to the screen in an article entitled Deciding what parents get to visit the factory, and we should have an exclusive interview with screenwriter John August at the end of the month. But now we learn that Tim Burton has given Wonka a back story. The new film involves a flashback which shows Wonka's troubled relationship with his father, a familiar theme in Burton's films.
