War of the Worlds was #1 at the box office this weekend, taking in $77.6 million over the long Fourth of July weekend. This brings its total, since debuting last Wednesday. to $113.3 million, according to studio estimates. The film fell well short of Spider-Man 2 which did $180.1 million in its first six days last year.

Batman Begins came in second with $18.7 million over the four-day weekend, raising its three-week domestic total to $154.1 million.

This is the 19th straight weekend that the weekend domestic box office has been down. The worst downturn previously recorded was 17 weekends in 1985.
