According to PaidContent (full story at the New York Times, which requires registration) movie studios are beginning to get more proactive about making their movies ready for distribution online. Sony and Warner Bros. are mentioned as studios who have digitized most or all of their library in preparation for online downloading. The twist: It seems they are now embracing a download-to-own model instead of sticking with a rental mentality. That means pricing will be closer to sell-through DVDs but ownership will come with restrictions including a movie being locked down to one computer. What ever happened to the idea of downloading movies onto hard drives for easy portability?
