Faster than you could say, "the box office slump was invented by the mainstream movie media, and as such, it will last only as long as they think is necessary", severaloutlets are reporting that Fantastic Four has done the impossible: it's overcome universally bad reviews to turn said slump around.
Here are the facts: Fantastic did have the third best opening of the year, behind Star Wars and War of the Worlds. However, the AP's claim that, with $56 million, Four "far surpassed industry expectations" is a little bit of an exaggeration; Variety predicted on Friday that War of the Worlds would fall 50%, to make about $39 million and take second place behind Fantastic's mid-$40s take. War's actual drop was slightly more, and Fantastic grossed slightly better.
So, what does this mean? Well, for one thing, a film that nobody seems too crazy about is now sure to get at least one sequel. But has a slump which may or may not have genuinely existed now come to a certain end? Maybe, maybe not. Full top ten after the jump.
