The year is now half way over, and as we slide out of summer blockbuster season and into fall "serious" season, the good films that came out in the first two quarters have a tendency to get lost in the end-of-year pre-Oscar shuffle. It's probably a good time, then, to take stock of what we've thus far loved. What's the best movie you've seen this year? It's gotta be a new release - other than that, all bets are off. I'll start. Right now, I think I'd have to go with Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin, just an incredibly surprising film that really struck a nerve with me. Honorable mentions go to Jacques Audiard's The Beat That My Heart Skipped and Andrew Bujalski's Mutual Appreciation. In the blockbuster, "it ain't gonna win any awards, but it sure was a fun time" category, I'm still firmly in bed with Brangelina - it's gotta be Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
