The recieved wisdom on The Conformist, which begins a run at Film Forum tomorrow, is that it's Bernardo Bertolucci's masterpiece. Michael Atkinson certainly has nothing but splooge for it, to the point where the image on his Village Voice review is even captioned with the pullquote, "An orgasm of coolness." I've never been a huge Bertolucci fan; The Last Emporer is worth sitting through if you can manage it, but Last Tango makes my shortlist for Most Overrated Film of All Time. I've never seen this, his investigation of the nexus of political and sexual dysfunction set in Facsist Italy, but I think I'll put it on my to-do list for the weekend.
