Julia Roberts will light up the Broadway stage with her famous smile next year, as she makes her Broadway debut in a three-person play, Three Days of Rain, to be directed by Broadway cool kid Joe Mantello (Wicked, Glengarry Glen Ross). Mantello had the actress read for the part in late June in Los Angeles. Mantello is on fire on Broadway of late - his fall revivial of The Odd Couple, with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, is already nearly sold out.
Roberts is an Oscar-winning actress (for Erin Brockovich, in 2000), but will the Pretty Woman's charm and talent on the big screen translate well to the intimacy of the stage? Mantello seems to think so - he says she will be "magnificent" in the play. Roberts is the latest in a string of actors recently making the transition from the big screen to the stage. No word on who will be taking the male leads; maybe Richard Gere is available. Or hey - Tom Cruise could take a part, and distribute Scientology leaflets in the lobby during intermission!
