In the five blurbs that Jonathan Lethem recently posted on his website under the title, The Drew Barrymore Stories, Miss Drew is a sly joker, a con artist, a problem solver. In each story, she's a laughing minx, keeping the company of great cultural figures like Ernest Hemingway and Alfred Hitchcock, and every single one has something to do with chocolate. My favorite is the one where Drew pushes Howard Hawks out of a fishing boat on the Snake River, but it's mostly because I'm amused by the idea of using, as fishing bait, Hemingway-discarded, whiskey-filled chocolates.
