cruzPedro Almodovar's newest film, Volver (The Return) has just finished its first week of shooting in Spain. Described as a comedy and set for release next June, the film's spirit is reportedly a combination of Mildred Pierce, Arsenic and Old Lace, and Almodovar's own What Have I Done to Deserve This?. While I have no earthly idea what it means, considering the facts that a)Volver stars Penelope Cruz, and b)Almodovar's recent, more mature films are almost uniformly thrilling, I'm officially excited about this one.

Almodovar posts his photos from the set and writes a bit about the film in the most recent entry on his official website, which I never knew existed until this very moment. In addition to Volver, he discusses his relationship with Cruz, the confluence of fact and fiction, and his family memories. The writing is warm and honest and totally disarming, just like you'd imagine it would be. Based on this entry alone, the site is worth frequent visits. (via Twitch)
