People who dismiss NASCAR as nothing more than several hours of driving in circles have probably never been to an actual stock car race of any kind. Television, while it is certainly involved in a lucrative marriage with NASCAR, tends to dilute the raw power and imminent danger that becomes much more palpable when you're in the stands, or even better, when you're actually riding along in one of the racecars like Quentin Tarantino did recently. The director was at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee and rode a few laps with Wally Dallenbach, a commentator for TNT. Apparently Quentin was the least pansy-like of all the celebrities Dallenbach has tried to scare to death, including Lisa Marie Presley and Ben Affleck.
