angIt's always interesting to see foreign perspectives on the US, and this short article in Ireland On-Line is no exception. While it's a forgone conclusion that the gay storyline and love scene Brokeback Mountain will offend some viewers, the article linked below puts the film in a greater context and describes Hollywood in general as still not comfortable with openly gay roles. Again - not shocking, but it's interesting in these days when American entertainment industries at least pretend to embrace homosexuality (as a valid lifestyle, not as a choice for themselves) to be reminded by a foreign publication that stars are still advised against taking gay film roles, and that people probably avoided involvement in Brokeback Mountain because of its subject matter.

The film screens tonight in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
