Japanese Story is not made for an American audience, a fact you're constantly reminded of as you watch it - and not just because the characters casually smoke and eat baked beans for breakfast. What the director is interested in is the relationship, or lack of, between two nations: Australia and Japan. The lack of a shared culture between these two Pacific Rim neighbors is a massive subject, and is here shrunken down to human size by two actors: Toni Collette and Gotaro Tsunashima. The story is about their journey into the heart of the Australian Outback - a howling moonscape the size of the continental U.S.
