andreSo, here it is:  the movie (obviously starring Andre 3000 and Big Boi) is set in a southern speakeasy during Prohibition, and is being directed by Bryan Barber. Who is this Bryan Barber, you ask? Well, he's never directed a feature before, but he did create the video for "Hey Ya," which is evidently all the qualification he needs. Things have moved very quickly on this again-untitled project, which is reportedly already in post-production. Along with Andre and Big Boi (I feel so silly typing "Boi"), the film also features VingRhames, Faizon Love, Patti LaBelle, and Ben Vereen (Ben Vereen! I wonder if he gets to sing "Bye Bye Life."), and Universal just bought the world-wide rights.

Though the project was originally thought to be a throwback, traditional Hollywood musical, HBO Films has revealed that it's just going to be a big Outkast blowout. According to HBO Films prez Colin Callender, "It's more akin to a Purple Rain or A Hard Day's Night," chock-full of original Outkast music. What? Did someone say Purple Rain? Oh hell yes. Since the first time I saw the video for "Roses," I've been praying that someone would let those two maniacs get in front of a camera for 90 minutes and just go crazy. While of course there's still plenty of time for it to be ruined by studio meddling, budget issues, or wardrobe malfunctions of an unprecedented nature, this flick sounds like it just might be an answer to those prayers.
