lionAng Lee's controversial western love story Brokeback Mountain took the top prize at Venice today, selected as best picture from a shortlist of 20 films. Also included on the list of finalists was George Clooney'sGood Night, and Good Luck, which was hotly tipped for the Golden Lion by some journalists. Clooney's film, however, did not leave Venice empty-handed:  David Strathairn won best actor for his work as journalist Edward R. Murrow. Finally, perhaps in part because of the Italian media's clamouring for an award for a domestic film, Italian actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno was named best actress for her lead role in The Beast in the Heart.
