A gentleman by the name of James Davis popped up this week, claiming to be the true author of
Ice Cube's hit comedy
Barbershop.
According to Mr. Davis (who has directed a handful of music videos, as
well as a local TV spot), characters and
plotlines from his 1999 script
appeared in the movie, and he wants $100 million in damages for the
violation. Accused of breech of contract and copyright infringement in
the suit are a whole slew of folks, including MGM and Ice Cube's own
production company. One might wonder why it took Davis three years to
suddenly realize that
Barbershop was based on his pilfered work
- perhaps he was browsing the
IMDb and noticed that, before
international and DVD sales, the movie took in a cool $75 million.
