Toni Collette turns to musicI don't know why I don't own Muriel's Wedding on DVD, since I liked the charming little movie so much. Possibly it's because my boyfriend has a severe allergy to ABBA, which is all over the movie's soundtrack. But how would he feel about music written and performed by the film's star, Toni Collette? We may find out soon enough. Apparently Collette's been writing songs for years while acting in movies such as Emma, The Sixth Sense and the upcoming release In Her Shoes. I don't remember a thing about her singing voice, although she must have been singing in Muriel's Wedding and maybe About a Boy. She was nominated for a 2000 Tony award for acting in the musical The Wild Party, so I must be missing something.

The Australian actress has formed a band, Toni Collette and the Finish, with her husband Dave Galafassi on drums. Collette describes their sound as alternative rock and pop. She's taking a break from acting to travel on tour with the band next year, in anticipation of their first album, "Beautiful, Awkward Pictures." Which is a good description of many of Collette's film roles, come to think of it. Perhaps she should arrange a megatour with Minnie Driver and Juliette Lewis, two other actresses who have decided their talents also stretch to music.
