Lars von Trier (whose Manderlay I'm on my way to see at NYFF as soon as I finish typing this) has announced his next step after finishing Wasington, the final film in his "America the Beautiful" trilogy. The Danish bad boy responsible for the bare-bones mini-movement Dogme 95 plans to shoot a comedy called The Manager of it All this February. In a dizzying extension of the Dogme aesthetic, von Trier (who, incedentally, added the "von" in the great tradition of von Stroheim and von Sternberg, who falsified his own "von" to trick people into thinking he was an aristocrat) will shoot the $3.5 million film with just one microphone. Von Trier has a better track record with formal gimmickery than most, but still ... this is getting boring.
