• Not to be outdone by their indie division's summer hit March of the Penguins, Warner Brothers will releaseHappy Feet - an animated musical about the polar birds that's been in the works since long before the French doc got Morgan Freemaned - day-and-date on IMAX 3D and conventional screens next November. The film features the voice talents of Nicole Kidman, Elijah Wood, and Brittany Murphy.
  • Mr and Mrs Smith director Doug Liman has signed on to directHeist, a "comedic drama" pilot for NBC. Josef Adalian calls it "an Ocean's Eleven-style hour about a group of thieves who'll spend the season engineering and executing a grand scheme to simultaneously rob three Rodeo Drive jewelry stores" on Oscar night. Casting is underway and all involved are hoping to premiere midseason.
  • The Hollywood Film Festival is planning to hand its next Career Achievement Award to Diane Keaton, at a ceremony to be held on October 24. Director Sam Mendes will be honored as Director of the Year at the same ceremony - even though his upcoming Jarhead won't have been released.
  • Ryan Reynolds fanatics, take note: according to Dennis Harvey, Waiting... is "puerile, inert and drab" and generally "mediocre in every department".
