Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning is a loving Finnish Star Trek spoof, made over seven years by a group of very patient students and Star Trek fans. The film, which is in Finnish with English subtitles, is about one James B. Pirk (geddit?), a Star Fleet commander who, on a voyage back in time to save Earth from an alien invasion, is shipwrecked on our planet in the 21st century.
Though it starts out as a drag because no one believes he's a hero from the future, at some point things take a positive turn, because Captain Pirk eventually becomes "a global overlord." I bet he gets all the chicks, too - Kirk would be so jealous. Based on the trailer, it's safe to say that while the acting isn't stellar, the movie as a whole is incredibly sophisticated.
Since completing their film, the makers have offered it for download and sale on their website, and you could say things are going pretty well: 450,000 downloads (not counting mirror sites) since starwreck.com went live on October 1. If things continue at this rate, Star Wreck will soon become one of the top three Finnish films of all time in terms of total viewers - not bad for a bunch of kids with too much time on their hands.
