Tom WolfeThe rights to I am Charlotte Simmons, Tom Wolfe's critically despised novel about how shocking Ivy League life is to a naive young girl have been acquired by a pair of production companies – Trilogy Entertainment and Syntax Entertainment – who can't wait to turn it into a movie. While I suppose this move isn't a surprise, given the prominence of the words "sex" and "young" in pretty much everything written about the book, it nevertheless makes my stomach turn. Based on reviews and interviews with Wolfe, the book itself sounds like an uncomfortable combination of voyeurism and righteous indignation at the crazy things kids get up to when they're on their own, and a movie based on that could easily be disgustingly exploitive while pretending to be on some sort of moral high ground. Though, come to think of it, I guess that'd just make it like tons of other college chick movies. I'll stop acting so surprised now.

John Watson, the genius who penned Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, has been hired to write the script. Since the book has already won a "bad sex" award, Watson's probably feeling pretty confident of his ability to improve at least the randy parts of Wolfe's work. Sigh. If God is merciful, financing will fall through, or there will be a script-fire or something.
