Now that Rockstar has plans to release a video game based on the 1979 cult movie The Warriors, I think we should all take this time to remember the video games we grew up with that were also based on movies. Here are some of mine, which nicely illustrate my taste in movies, not to mention the fact that I've never owned a PlayStation or Xbox:
- E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (Atari): One of the most popular movies of all time spawned one of the least popular video games ever. Nevertheless, I played the hell out of this game as a kid, despite the fact that ninety-five percent of my time was spent trying to levitate E.T. out of holes.
- The Empire Strikes Back (Atari): Joysticks really weren't that great for tactical maneuvers, as this game demonstrated. The object was to shoot down the Imperial Walkers, but if I remember correctly, trying to get in the needed seven million shots before you grew bored with the game was extremely difficult.
- Friday the 13th (Nintendo): The perfect training game for anyone who wants a career in saving children from machete-wielding maniacs. Not the most entertaining game ever made, but possibly more entertaining than the movies it was based on.
