Ever heard of Ryan Gattis? Neither
have I. But apparently some very important people have, as Hollywood
Reporter is now detailing. It seems that the Weinstein Company has just won an
aggressive bidding war to secure the rights to Gattis’s novel Kung Fu High School, and Gattis
will reportedly find himself seven figures richer as a result. Ernesto Foronda will be the
screenwriter, with Neal Edelstein
and Mike Macari producing.
Kung Fu High School is just what you’d expect from the title – the story of a 15 year old Japanese girl who attends a high school focused around brutal martial arts combat. True to the pseudo-Japanese form, it will also feature a healthy dose of vanishing Kung Fu masters, suspicious murders, incestuous thoughts (for a cousin named Jimmy), and survival against the odds. One review I read described it as “Fight Club meets Breakfast Club.”
I don’t know where to begin with my personal take on this one. I think I’ll have to wait for a bit more news before I begin forming opinions. Anyone have a gut reaction to this news they’d like to share?
