Johnny Depp has played a transvestite, an eyelinered pirate, the world's worst filmmaker, a drug dealer, and Hunter S. Thompson, but as far as I can tell, never a full-on junkie. He'll change that when he stars in Shantaram, a movie based on Gregory David Roberts' heroin-infused memoir. "I was a revolutionary who lost his ideals in heroin, a philosopher who lost his integrity in crime, and a poet who lost his soul in a maximum-security prison. When I escaped from that prison, over the front wall, between two gun-towers, I became my country's most wanted man," writes Roberts on his website. So who better to adapt such a story than Eric Roth, the man behind ... Forrest Gump? The project is set up at Warner Brothers; no director has yet been named.
