smallformat coverFor more than 50 years, German filmmakers who work in small formats - primarily Super-8 and 16mm - have been reading schmalfilm magazine, a periodical dedicated to "the international...scene, new products, tips for better filming, tests, labs, film material, the history of camera brands, a collector's marketplace, and portraits of interesting groups and films." Whew. While for those of us not engaged in filmmaking this might not seem overly fascinating, based on the elation that has greeted the publication's first-ever English-language issue (called smallformat), it's a goldmine for people who work in the field.

While each issue is a little pricey ($10), the magazine looks incredibly well-put together, and seem full of relevant, thoughtful articles on a wide variety of topics. Well worth a look if you're a filmmaker, or just curious about the formats.
