The 50 Cent Movie made about $3 million in its first day of release – which is okay, but a long way from 8 Mile's $50 million + opening weekend. No one thinks Get Rich or Die Tryin' will come anywhere near that bar by Sunday night, but it might still provide Chicken Little a bit of speed bump on the way to the top of the charts.
The boys who made Fight Club and Mr. and Mrs. Smith are teaming up on Jumper, the first installment of an adventure trilogy to be based on the Stephen Gold novel of the same name. Smith's Doug Liman will direct, and its writer, Simon Kinberg, will produce. Jim Uhls of Fight fame will write the script.
David Cronenberg, whose A History of Violence is still the best film I've seen all year, is working on adapting his own Dead Ringers into a series for HBO. After that, he'll get to work on a feature adaptation of London Fields, based on Martin Amis novel.
Ending on a bit of a sad note this morning: Halloween producer Moustapha Akkad was killed in yesterday's hotel bombings in Amman, Jordan. Akkad, who produced all eight films in the horror franchise, lived in Lebanon and was in Jordan for a wedding. He was 70 years old.
