Ralph FiennesBoth the British Independent Film Awards and the Gotham Awards were handed out last night, giving some filmmakers and studios more fodder for their Oscar campaigns. The big winner at the London ceremony was The Constant Gardener, which was named best picture, while its stars (Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz, neither of whom bothered to show up) walked away with the top acting honors. Also picking up some bling was Rosamund Pike, who was recognized for her supporting work in The Libertine. Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, major awards at New York's Gotham Awards went to Capote (best feature, breakthrough director for Bennett Miller) and Murderball (best documentary).

It's official, ladies and gentlemen: the awards season is underway.
