Anthony Kaufman reacts suitably badly to the news that Altoids is sponsoring Anthology Film Archives' 35th anniversary: "I'm all for honoring Anthology, but if I see a single Altoid in the building, I will surely choke on their curiously crass and vomitous opportunism."

For those of you not in the know: Anthology, housed in a massive ex-courthouse on the corner of 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue in Manhattan, is just about the last bastion of the old Lower East Side. Seedy and artist-friendly up through the mid-90s, the area is now awash in cosmo-swillers, scooping up new condos and swooping in on designer boutiques. But Anthology stiill survives, even thrives, with a constantly evolving calendar of special events (from Thurston Moore's favorite arcana to Peter Bogdanovich's) and Essential Cinema screenings. Corporate sponsorship or not, I'll be at the reception this Friday night - will you?
