Nina SimoneIn a move that is destined to either destroy her acting career before it starts or transform her instantly into a superstar, Mary J. Blige has signed on to play Nina Simone in an MTV Films biopic. The movie will focus on "Simone's ascent to stardom and her relationship with Paris-based manager Clifton Henderson," and will be written by TV sitcom veteran Cynthia Mort.

As someone with an iPod full of Nina, my first reaction to this news is sympathy for Blige. What could have convinced her to undertake this thankless task? Simone was such a towering, epic talent and such a powerful human being that the thought of anyone even trying to play her is mind-blowing, and the odds of success seem incredibly small. That said, of course, I realize that there are people out there who feel the same way about Ray Charles that I do about Nina, and we all know how that turned out, so maybe there's hope.
