Rocco SiffrediThe Italian government is trying to do two things: first, just like everyone else, they need to increase tax revenue; second, they want to find a way to raise Italy's birthrate, which is one of the lowest in the world. To accomplish those twin ends, a new tax has been proposed - on pornography. If the tax (which is already included in Prime Minister/media mogul/soccer king Silvio Berlusconi's new budget) is approved, it would levy a 20% fee on the purchase or rental of porn DVDs, as well as on tickets to movie theaters and the costs of pay-per-view movies. Profits from the tax - and it's here that the birth rate thing comes in - would go towards helping working mothers defray the costs of babysitters. Imagine that combination being proposed here. The mind boggles.

Not surprisingly, the porn industry is not happy with what Rocco Siffredi (He's "Italy's most celebrated movie stud" - and yes, that phrase actually appeared in The Guardian.) has called "a war on sex." Though generally nobody really cares what the porn industry thinks, actors have threatened street demonstrations if the tax passes, which surely has some Italians strongly supporting the proposal.
