Squid and the WhaleAfter two days of jury deliberation, the American Film Institute last night announced its annual list of the 10 "most outstanding" films of the year. Leading the list are the films that have already become the usual suspects: Brokeback Mountain, King Kong, Capote, and Good Night, and Good Luck. All four films have been honored by various groups and festivals this year, and will surely be frequently mentioned tomorrow morning when the Hollywood Foreign Press announce the Golden Globe nominees.

Also on the AFI's list is Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale, a highly-praised indie film that seems to be building up an impressive head of steam - at this rate, even Oscar nominations wouldn't be too surprising. The AFI also chose to honor The 40 Year Old Virgin, thus making it the first comedy to even be mentioned this awards season. Thank the Lord for Steve Carell.
