Busby Berkeley boxed setMusicals simply haven't been the same since the days when Busby Berkeley choreographed lines of scantily-clad dancing girls into forming the shapes of musical instruments, plunging into waterfalls, and waving giant bananas in sexually suggestive ways. A boxed set of Berkeley's early Thirties musicals will be released by Warner on March 21, 2006. The set includes not only the classic 42nd Street, which was already available on DVD, but also four movies new to DVD: Gold Diggers of 1933, Footlight Parade, Dames, and Gold Diggers of 1935. In addition, the boxed set contains a three-hour documentary of clips featuring many of Berkeley's most notorious musical numbers.

The Warner Classics DVD collections from the past couple of years have been first-rate, and I can't wait to add this one to my shelf, right next to the Astaire-Rogers boxed set. 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Dames all feature Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler. Gold Diggers of 1935 stars Powell and Gloria Stuart (known to Titanic fans as Kate Winslet's old-lady counterpart). And Footlight Parade stars James Cagney in his first singing-and-dancing film role. Who cares about the storylines ... it's the fabulous dance numbers that make these musicals unique and fun.
