The end of the year is a slow time for film-related events in Austin. However, January is starting to look promising with a Werner Herzog retrospective, an upcoming film series from Austin Film Society, and other goodies.
  • Be Here To Love Me: A Film about Townes Van Zandt is still playing at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar nightly at 7:15 for the next week. If you haven't seen this documentary yet, now's your chance.
  • Alamo Downtown's Music Monday nights continue with The Artist Formerly Known as Captain Beefheart, which screens on Monday 1/2. The 1997 BBC documentary profiles Don Van Vliet/Captain Beefheart and includes rehearsal footage as well as interviews from Ry Cooder and Matt Groening.
  • Throughout January, Alamo Downtown will host a Werner Herzog retrospective of four movies, all with brand-new 35mm prints: Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Wheel of Time, and Aguirre, The Wrath of God. The 1982 film Fitzcarraldo is the first in the series, screening on Tuesday 1/3 and Sunday 1/8.
