Rumors have flew fast and furious over the last 24-48 hours, regarding a bit of He-Man news of suspect origin which has now appeared on many popular movie blogs and the like. If this new information is to be believed, John Glover has signed up to play Skeletor in John Woo's new adaptation of He-Man. Glover is certainly a skilled actor in his own right, and could quite possibly be a very convincing evil overlord – but I wouldn't get your hopes up if I were you. The most solid bit of "fact" that seems to exist to back up this news is the dubious cast list on the oft-mistaken IMDB.* There's not even a shadowy inside tipster that I can locate on this one. In fact, I'm reasonably certain that the movie is still in limbo, with no production currently in sight. The good folks over at He-Man dot org say they've got contacts all over the place within the industry, and they are sure that no action is currently happening with the MOTU movie rights. "As it stands, there is no movement on the MOTU movie. It will not be out in 2006, it has not been assigned a budget and there is no cast."
Sorry, fans. I, like you, am incredibly disappointed to know that
He-Man and company remain in storage. I know its sheer nostalgia that drives my desire to see this film created; and I
know that its likely that even if it was created I'd find myself angry over what they were doing to it (a la the Transformers). But still...a geek can dream, can't he?
*note: IMDB is a good resource in many ways, it's just not great for information on yet-to-be released movies.
