Hot on the heels of yesterday's massive uproar about its automated DVD recommendations, Wal-Mart has announced that its online store will no longer be offering any sort of movie suggestions. For those of you missed the internet-based frenzy, a screenshot (in the link above) was posted showing that a search for the Planet of the Apes TV series returns a list of recommended "similar items" including Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, a Martin Luther King disc, and Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson.

Whatever the reason for the association of apes and African-American icons, a firestorm of racism accusations arose, followed quickly by frantic damage control efforts by Wal-mart. When apologetic emails and press statements failed to do the trick, the company decided to pull the plug on recommendations altogether. Boy, 2006 is shaping up to be just as good as 2005 was for them, huh?
