This is your lucky day, all ye women who suffer the effects of AIDS, human trafficking, or domestic violence: Nicole Kidman will from this moment "travel the globe" and fight for you. Woo hoo! Doesn't that make your horrible suffering really lift, if only for a moment? The UN apparently thinks it will, because they've appointed her their very own "ambassador for women."

Really, though, it turns out that it's Kidman's mom who deserves the appointment. According to Nicole herself, "Her mother heard about a U.N. program helping Cambodian women revive traditional silk-weaving skills, phoned her [daughter] up and said she should get involved." And so she did, which is what brought her to the UN's attention. So there you go - where the hell is Mama Kidman's high-profile appointment?
