Because the Brokeback Mountain awards train wasn't going quite fast enough, the Writers Guild of America added a bit more fuel to the fire last night by awarding the film its best adapted screenplay award. Written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, the script - which won the same award at the Golden Globes last month - is an adaptation of a short story by Annie Proulx. Meanwhile, Crash (written by Bobby Moresco and director Paul Haggis) continued its pre-Oscar surge by taking home the award for best original screenplay.

When the WGA announced its nominations in early January, Karina pointed out the unusual decision to include a pair of summer movies - Cinderella Man and The 40 Year Old Virgin - in the list, and wondered if the move was a sign of further recognition to come for the two films. Sadly, however, it was not to be, and both films went home empty-handed yet again.
