Ladies, have you ever wondered what Gael Garcia Bernal -- whom you may know from such films as 'Y Tu Mama Tambien,''The Motorcycle Diaries,''Bad Education' and 'I've Dated Natalie Portman' (OK, this last one isn't a movie, but he did) -- is like in person? Chances are, you've thought, "Man, I bet he's a DREAMBOAT." Now, I'm not sure about that. I'm not even sure if anybody in recorded history besides Lea Thompson in 'Back to the Future' has ever actually used the term "dreamboat." But having just this moment returned from interviewing Gael, I can tell you this: He's one hell of a nice guy. And he's also kind of short -- which is nice for a guy like me, because at 5'8" I don't get to feel tall very often.
Anyways, I won't be posting the full interview with Gael until the week his movie 'The King' is released (the week of May 19), but I thought I'd whet your appetite with a few juicy tidbits from our meeting. One, Gael is one of the most polite movie stars around. I know this because he laughed at almost all my jokes, and pretty much only seven percent of my attempts at humor are remotely in the vicinity of what Merriam and Webster would define "funny." Two, Gael thinks his 'Babel' co-star Cate Blanchett is amazing. Now, he didn't use the word "dreamboat" to describe her, but I'm pretty sure his thoughts were along those lines. Three, the president of Mexico has been know to fly Gael around in a plane -- in his dreams. And finally, Gael is absolutely nothing like his character in 'The King' -- a guy named Elvis who beds his half-sister, stabs his half-brother and then moves into said half-brother's room for good measure. So he's got that going for him, which is nice.
I think that's just about enough for today. Come back tomorrow for my picks for this week's top DVDs.
