'Superman Returns' soared to $52.2 million at the box office this weekend, almost doubling the $27.1 million take of runner-up 'The Devil Wears Prada.' That brings Supes' five day total (it opened on Wednesday) to $84.2 million. Not too shabby for a movie about a guy who wears neck-to-toe Spandex.
Now, with all of my Superman-related posts recently, there have been a lot of comments on this blog -- some asking questions about the film, some expressing passionate opinions about how the movie stacks up to the original 'Superman' and other superhero flicks, and some flat-out calling me an idiot. So, I thought I'd take this opportunity to highlight some of the things I've been seeing in the comments.
Biggest Reason Many of You DO NOT Want to See 'Superman Returns': Superman has hurt a lot of blue-blooded Americans' feelings by apparently choosing to renounce his American citizenship. Instead of fighting for "truth, justice and the American way," the Man of Steel now fights for "truth, justice and all that stuff." Screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris intentionally left "the American way" out of Supes' mission statement this time around, feeling that it was an antiquated expression whose current connotations might not be in line with Superman's credo. With all the flack the writers have been getting for their change, they may as well have said that Supes now fights for "truth, justice and legalized marijuana." But then Woody Harrelson would have had to play Superman.
Biggest Supporter of 'Daredevil': In response to a post I did about the Most Underrated Superhero Flicks -- which did not include the Ben Affleck turd-fest otherwise known as 'Daredevil' -- one impassioned fan writes that "'Daredevil' is actually one of the better superhero movies but just because DD is a lesser known hero and starred Ben Affleck you idiots all bash it. Morons!" That pretty much speaks for itself.
Your Favorite Underrated Superhero Movies: In response to the same post above, many wrote in with their top picks for overlooked superhero flicks. The most mentioned movies: 'Mystery Men,''Hellboy,''The Rocketeer' and 'Unbreakable.' Good call on all accounts -- especially 'Unbreakable.' That's one flick that needs a sequel STAT.
An Answer to a Question:scsuae asks, "How does Superman get back to Krypton?" The answer: After astronomers discover Krypton's remains, Supes pilots a spaceship similar to the one that originally delivered him to Earth back to his home planet. The reason he can't fly there on his own: Once he got close to Krypton's red sun, he'd lose his powers and die. And that would not be cool.
Well, that's it for today. Thanks to all of you who take the time to post comments to this blog -- even those of you who think I'm an idiot.
