While I slowly recover from the pain Live Free or Die Hard (Why did they have to name it that? Why?) has caused me, I've been trying to muster up some excitement for the fourth installment in a series I have thoroughly enjoyed. (And that includes Die Hard 2. Dammit, I liked the snowmobile scene!) If there's one thing that defines a great Die Hard flick, it's the actor chosen to play Bruce Willis' sidekick. The original had Reginald VelJohnson as the tough local cop with a tainted past. Die Hard with a Vengeance had Samuel L. Jackson as the angry shop owner who simply wants to just go about the rest of his day. (We'll skip over Die Hard 2 for now. But how 'bout that snowmobile scene?)
For Live Free or Die Hard, the latest rumors have Justin Long starring alongside Bruce Willis as a teenage computer hacker released from prison in order to help John McClane save the world. Having immensely enjoyed Long's performance in the upcoming Accepted (which I'll review next week), I view him as a perfect fit for the role. However, according to Long himself, said role is not his ... yet. Talking to the Boston Herald, the actor (who also plays 'the guy you just wanna smack across the face' in all those Mac Ads) said he is under consideration but has not been offered the part ... though he'd love to get in on the action.
Said Long, "It was a good script. I never even get to read scripts like that because I'm never even considered for those parts. I mean, it would just be really awesome to shoot guns with Bruce Willis!" Personally, I think it's just a matter of time before the kid lands this gig. With production beginning real soon, I have no idea what they're waiting for. Give Long the part!
