One of the favorite topics of movienerd conversation is "which actor almost got what role." Sure, most of us know that Tom Selleck was the original choice to play Indiana Jones (but had to refuse because of his TV contract), that Eric Stoltz was hired (and then fired) on Back to the Future, and that Kim Basinger (infamously) bailed on the eventual dungpile that was Boxing Helena -- but did you know that Will Smith was being courted to star in The Matrix? That Sean Connery was approached to play Gandalf in Lord of the Rings? That Sean Penn almost played Tyler Durden?

If any of these tidbits are news to you (and most of 'em are to me), then you'll want to spend an hour or two clicking through an excellent new website called NotStarring.com. The site describes itself thusly: "notstarring.com is a movie trivia database focusing exclusively on movie stars and the roles they turned down, auditioned for, got fired from, or simply didn't get." User submissions are gratefully accepted, and if you come across an item that you just KNOW is erroneous, the site-masters will fix and/or remove it -- which is a nice switch from most trivia-based websites.

Kim covered this topic yesterday, and her report was packed with juicy little possibilities, but now we have a site dedicated to all such almost-castings -- plus I find notstarring.com to be a well-designed, colorful and generally fun site. Plus they have trivia games, contests and all sorts of movie-geek gravy. So go check it out.

I mean ... Russell Crowe starring as Shakespeare in Love? I just don't see it.
