The news of a Dallas feature film has been floating around for some time now. Casting announcements flew fast and furious; Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, and Jennifer Lopez were all attached at one time or another (gossip had Lopez officially attached to the film but she later dropped out in August).
Variety has now reported that the film, due to begin shooting in November, has been put on hold while the flick is re-cast (with the exception of John Travolta as JR Ewing). Director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) still has not committed to directing Robert Harling's script with a new cast, but no major changes are expected. With a budget of $65 million, which was mainly being put toward a cast that included Luke Wilson (Bobby Ewing) and Shirley MacLaine (Miss Ellie,) the new plan involves trying to make the movie with some substantially less expensive talent. New Regency is hoping to re-cast the film and stick this puppy into production by January.
Well, nothing inspires confidence in a unneeded remake of a tacky TV show than a complete overhaul of the project weeks before they were supposed to start shooting. Plus, you have to question the logic of a studio that thinks packing the rafters with bargain basement celebrities will help.
