Will Smith in Pursuit of HappynessWell, it's Monday, and I have egg on my face, as I completely biffed the Box Office Prediction this week. I mean, I spent the entire weekend thinking that 'Charlotte's Web' might overtake 'Eragon' for the top spot, but then, seemingly out of nowhere ... Well, I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's what I predicted:
  1. Eragon
  2. Charlotte's Web
  3. The Pursuit of Happyness
  4. Apocalypto
  5. Happy Feet
And here's how it actually went down:

  1. The Pursuit of Happyness - $27 million
  2. Eragon - $23.45 million
  3. Charlotte's Web - $12 million
  4. Happy Feet - $8.5 million
  5. The Holiday - $8.2 million

Yikes. I vastly underestimated the winning combination of Will Smith and his adorable kid. People like to cry around Christmas -- I'll have to remember that. In all seriousness, it's nice to see a quality, adult drama doing well., and the fact that Smith earned a Golden Globe nomination the day before his movie came out probably didn't hurt. As for 'Eragon,' it didn't do poorly (and in my defense, let's recall that I predicted around $25 million for the film, which it did earn); but in the end the reviews were tepid, and the lack of positive reaction among fans didn't help in generating any word-of-mouth traffic.
