While out promoting his new film TheReaping, producer Joel Silver provided a few more tidbits regarding the upcoming Speed Racer; stuff that may or may not raise your anticipation meter up a notch. While we already knew the WachowskiBros. planned on making Speed Racer a "a big family movie," Silver confirmed the film will be rated G ... for "None of the actors will be dressed up in any tight leather outfits, guaranteed!" I'm sure it's not what you would expect from the guys who brought us The Matrix Trilogy; then again, they're adapting a 1960's cartoon. Fear not Wachowski fans, those boys are still up to something big, and, from the little news that is trickling out, it appears as if they're going to absolutely WOW us with some amazing visuals. To give you a little taste of what to expect, Silver said the Mach 5 will be completely CGI, yet the film is supposed to be live action. So, right off the bat we know they're blending the two ... which should look real cool. And hey, Emile Hirsch (Alpha Dog) has just signed on to star as Speed Racer.
Speaking of Hirsch, he recently sat down for one of those staged promotional interviews in which he talks more about the film, the role ... and his addiction to methamphetamine. Okay, I made the last part up -- but the video really does feel like one of those Primetime/Dateline NBC segments, with its soft, inviting tones. In fact, it would make sense if Hirsch ended the interview by saying: "You know kids, I drive fast in the film ... but that doesn't mean you should drive drunk." Cue piano music, fade out. Nevertheless, Hirsch tells us that he's excited to take on the role, and says the film is "futuristic, like Blade Runner meets Andy Warhol ... kind of pop art." Sounds cool enough. Speed Racer hits theaters on May 9, 2008.
