It's time to forget about the rumors that D.J Caruso was going to helm Wolverine, snickety snitch! (I apologize. Mallrats has made it an impossibility to hear the word "wolverine" and not follow it with that phrase at least once in a conversation about the mutant.) And forget about Len Wiseman as well. In a surprise twist, Variety has reported that Twentieth Century Fox has picked Gavin Hood to direct Hugh Jackman in the eagerly-awaited prequel. Who's he? The South African director is the man behind Tsotsi, which won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar last year. He is definitely stretching his legs -- moving from a young Johannesburg gang leader to a man with some adamantium. Oh yeah -- and in-between, he helmed the upcoming flick Rendition, which stars Witherspoon, Mr. Gyllenhaal, Streep and Sarsgaard.

Hugh Jackman says about the choice: "I have long been a fan of Gavin's work and know he will make a masterful film with the character intensity and action beats the fans expect." I hope he's right, but frankly, they'd have to really dig deep for me to not be interested in this project -- like, to completely over-exaggerate, putting Paris Hilton behind the camera. According to the plot outline on IMDb, Logan -aka- Wolverine, is going to seek revenge against Victor Creed -- the man who later becomes Sabertooth -- for the death of his lady friend. The mission ultimately leads him to going through the Weapon X program, and well, you know the rest.
