Mario Van Peebles has been all over the place. He was lucky enough to be around when Jaws got personal, and he's taken on meaty roles from Malcolm X to Mohammed Ali Paula Abdul Rahim. While behind the camera, he's usually busy with films like New Jack City and Badasssss. See a theme? Now, of course, the next logical move would be science fiction. According to Variety, Van Peebles has been developing a sci fi movie for the last 6 years or so, called The Uniter, and now he's signed on to direct his screenplay.

The Uniter centers on "a political fugitive who escapes from the future back to the present to teach a 13-year-old how to use his powers to unite the warring factions of the world before it's too late for planet Earth." He says that the story comes from both his own travels to India, and myths about the Aztec calendars ending in the year 2012. Young kids, time-traveling politicians, India, and Aztec calendars... At the very least, you have to give him some points for originality. Or, some points for total randomness, since it sounds like a less-violent, less machine-focused Terminator. And just what are this kid's powers? Will this be a superhero sci fi movie, or are they just referring to politics or something? Beats me, but I'm at least a little intrigued.

However, if the above isn't your cup of tea, he's also got another project on the way. Just to keep it real, he's also putting together a documentary called Bring Your A Game, which centers on U.S. education and "its relationship to the penal system." So, take your pick: a time-traveling, world-saving politician and a kid with powers, or a doc about education and jail.
