Marley & Me has been zooming its way to production for a while now because of that writers strike and all, and even in rush and the sea of dropped pens, there's been a rewrite by Scott Frank and director Shawn Levy has been replaced by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada). Now we've got a new player to add to the list while the project approaches its spring start date. If a big retriever who wreaks havoc while looking super cute, plus Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, aren't enough to whet your Marley & Me appetite, Variety has posted the next casting addition -- Alan Arkin.

Based on the bestselling book by John Grogan, the film will focus on a Philadelphia newspaper columnist (Wilson) who is looking into the possibility of starting a family with his wife (Aniston). To get a taste of how it would be, the couple decide to adopt a dog. "The incorrigible Labrador retriever is a hyperactive handful, turning their lives upside down." Whoops. Arkin will enter the mix as Wilson's newspaper editor. Variety points out that this will be Wilson's first feature since his hospitalization last summer, which should put an interesting spin on things. I'm just glad that it's a positive role, and not one of his sullen and suicidal characters. Good luck, Owen.
