I have a confession to make: I don't like anime. I spent the better part of a year trying to develop an appreciation for the form, but I'd honestly rather spend an evening discussing women's issues with Oprah than sit through the average Japanese cartoon. In fact, all I learned during my year-long study of Japanese animation is that I dug Ninja Scroll and tentacle-porn like La Blue Girl cracks me up (go figure...).
That being said, I'll still check out the occasional anime-styled film. I'm required by film critic law to see every Miyazaki flick, for instance (if only so I don't sound like a rube when the other critics start gushing about it). I'll also willingly sit down with anything that looks like it might interest me enough to change my perception of the artform. Which, in a very roundabout way, brings us to the new trailer for Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic.
This anime tie-in to EA's forthcoming God of Warclone marks the second time in recent years that the company has taken a game title and released an ancillary cartoon in an attempt to drum up extra interest. They also did it last year with Dead Space: Downfall(an animated prequel to the main game) and that turned out fairly well.
Unlike Downfall, Dante's Inferno doesn't appear to be a prequel, but instead is simply an animated version of the game's narrative. Despite my general disinterest in all things anime, this title has piqued my curiosity with its mixture of melodrama and violent death. If nothing else, it should serve as a pleasing appetizer to tide us all over until the Dante's Inferno feature film (already in pre-production) eventually releases.
